I'm from California and wants to buy a walkie-talkie up well with a good selection (usable), perhaps 20 miles. Do I need to purchase a license if I am online? is exclusively used for the family.

Midland is a better or Motorola? not this type of VHF, but only the FRS / GMRS corresponding Kinda radio.and in your pocket and also my son.

You need a license to operate GMRS channels.

GMRS Channels 15-22 are on their radios. It is forbidden to communicate through these channels without a license. They are very strict on this point. Many people have condemned themselves to operate in the GMRS channels without a license a fine. So be careful.

It is difficult to obtain a license. It costs $ 80 for five years. This represents approximately $ 1.34 per month.

You can also use other channels (1-14) without any problem.

The GMRS give better fuel consumption, but still based on the line of sight (mountains, trees, etc., all reduce the amount of miles).

About the brand to choose, they are better able to read, research,. Personally, I have had good experiences with GXT740 Midland. But even here it is better to read many reviews, and select with the maximum score of more people.

Hope this helps! Good luck in your search for the radio for you and your family!
